2025 Innovation Fund

The CFI Innovation Fund (IF) program provides investments in infrastructure, across the full spectrum of research from the most fundamental to applied through to technology development.

Projects funded through the Innovation fund will help Canada remain at the forefront of exploration and knowledge generation while making meaningful contributions to generating social, health, environmental and economic benefits and addressing global challenges.

2025 Innovation Fund

Update : CFI released the draft call on April 18, 2024.

In anticipation of the call, the UBC offices of the Vice-President of Research and Innovation and Institutional Programs Office launched an internal competition in late 2023. UBC’s internal processes remain similar to the previous competitions, while aiming to maximize project development time and time for internal review. Institutions have a limit on the total requests (in dollars, limited by the UBC CFI Funding Envelope, or “cap”) that they can submit to the CFI. The UBC internal processes are geared towards selecting those with the highest likelihood of success.

  • New for 2025 Innovation Fund: the CFI has introduced two new streams in addition to the open stream. Internal competition for Stream 1 (open) is already underway and updates will come soon for the two new streams (updated April 18, 2024)
  • New for 2025 Innovation Fund: Researchers with private-sector partners and/or whose work advances a sensitive technology research area will be required to submit additional research-security documentation at the time of application. See CFI’s Guidelines on Research Security for more information or contact UBC’s Research Security team for further assistance.
