The CFI Innovation Fund (IF) program provides investments in infrastructure, across the full spectrum of research from the most fundamental to applied through to technology development.
Projects funded through the Innovation fund will help Canada remain at the forefront of exploration and knowledge generation while making meaningful contributions to generating social, health, environmental and economic benefits and addressing global challenges.
2027 Innovation Fund
Moving forward, the CFI will run Innovation Fund competitions every two years, rather than every two-and-a-half to three years as they have done in the past. As a result, the next competition will be launched in early 2026, with decisions to be made by the CFI’s Board of Directors in fall 2027. The overall budget for the 2027 competition will be up to $325 million in capital costs, with up to $97 million in associated infrastructure operating funding.
In response to this, the UBC offices of the Vice-President of Research and Innovation (VPRI) and Institutional Programs Office (IPO) are beginning the planning stages now to maximize development time and support for potential IF projects. The internal process will be similar to previous competitions. Institutions have a limit on the total requests (in dollars, limited by UBC CFI Funding envelope) that they can submit to CFI, so our processes are geared towards selecting projects with the highest likelihood of success.
