UBC Procedures for JELF Partnership Applications

The Institutional Programs Office supports researchers who are applying for a CFI JELF Partnership.

The CFI currently partners with the Canada Research Chair (CRC) program; the Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) program; the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada's (NSERC) Industrial Research Chair program and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada's (SSHRC) Partnership Grants programs through the JELF Partnership application stream.

CFI deadlines for a JELF Partnership follow those of the partnering agency's relevant program deadlines. However, UBC IPO also has its own internal deadlines, which are separate from the CRC internal review deadlines. Please contact our office as soon as possible, before planning to apply for JELF Partnership.

If you are currently a Canada Research Chair or you are a CRC nominee and are submitting your JELF application at the same time as your CRC renewal or nomination, please follow the internal deadlines accordingly. Further enquiries can be directed to the Manager, institutional Programs and/or our office.

Please note: you are not automatically eligible to apply for  JELF Partnership (including CRC-JELF) if you have been at UBC longer than 24 months, i.e. you are a retention candidate*. Such a candidate's Faculty must request a cap allocation prior to our internal deadline, using the CFI JELF cap request form

*Faculties can request a JELF cap for retention candidates. The requestor (Faculty ADR) needs to demonstrate strong commitment from the Faculty and Department to the candidate.  For example, a 30% cash contribution from the Faculty, Department and Research Institute towards the project cash budget demonstrates strong commitment.

The Faculty ADR can email a completed JELF cap request form to ipo.admin@ubc.ca
